Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
"You don't need a high IQ to succeed in life, but you need to manage your emotions and understand others. That is the determining factor for success."
- Warren Buffett
My embarrassing story
About five years ago, when I was still working at my previous company, which was also a famous multinational corporation, I had a foreign line manager. He was a very admirable manager to me as he could manage many Training & Quality teams across several countries in the ASEAN region at the same time.
At that time, I had just started managing a small team, which was going through a rather stressful period. The training schedule was packed, the team was short-staffed and recruitment was lagging behind, while the company had a high demand for resources to grow. I myself couldn't avoid feeling burnt out during that chaotic period.
One day, my boss called me in and said, "Linh. our team will soon be implementing a new Learning Management System (LMS) to synchronize with the region. This means we'll have to transfer all the training data from Excel to the new system. Please send the trainers for training on the new system so we can prepare to proceed next month."
Upon hearing "transfer data from Excel to the system" and "train on the new system," I suddenly felt a strong surge of resistance. A wave of heat rushed to my head, and without much thought, I almost shouted out, "The training team is currently overloaded, and everyone is exhausted. Why is this new system coming up now, adding more workload for us? I don't agree." Can you guess what happened next?
"Anything you do in anger ends in shame."
- Benjamin Franklin-
Surprisingly, my boss did not reprimand me for "yelling at the boss." Instead, he calmly said one word to me: "Breathe."
Even now, when I think back to my reaction at that moment, I still feel embarrassed and apologetic towards my boss. As fate would have it, a year later, I began to learn about Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and realized that my reaction was due to a lack of emotional control. My boss's advice to "breathe" was an example of a great leader with Emotional Intelligence.
